6G, Geopolitics, and the Race for Spectrum Sovereignty
The 6G race isn't really about speeds and latency. It's a contest over standards-setting bodies, chip supply chains, and the geopolitics of who gets to define the next generation of wireless.
Every generation of mobile technology arrives wrapped in promotional language about speeds and use cases. 6G is no exception — VR, holographic calls, sub-millisecond latency. But the technology is downstream of a much messier story: which countries control the standards bodies, the IP portfolios, and the rare-earth supply chains that make any of it possible.
Three battles, not one
The 6G race actually consists of three overlapping contests:
- Standards at 3GPP and ITU — where engineers from competing blocs negotiate the technical baseline.
- Patents — where the holders of essential patents extract rents from every device sold.
- Spectrum — where governments allocate the limited resource of usable radio frequencies.
Thailand has historically been a taker in all three: implementing standards set by others, paying licensing fees, and managing spectrum reactively. The 6G window is a rare chance to change that — at least in spectrum policy, where domestic decisions still matter.
What I think Thailand should do
A modest but real ambition: secure participation in 3GPP working groups, build a domestic test environment in mmWave and sub-THz bands, and coordinate with ASEAN neighbors on spectrum harmonization. Nothing here is about winning the race — it's about not being trampled by it.
